Alan Brown of ORBS was sued for defmation 3 separate times, and lost all
three lawsuits. Brown listed ISPs he didn't like in his "open relay"
blacklist. The judge in one case indicated that Brown did this for
financial gain. ORBS was shutdown on a contempt of court order after
Brown posted his blacklist contents rather than remove the false entries.
Brown shut/sold his ISP, manawatu.nz.co, to pay for damages. After this,
blacklists began to adopt "suit-proof" operation, led by someone who has
no assets with which to pay damages (message by Ron Guillmette on spaml).
I have some of this information at www.iadl.org. You can also find a lot
by googling for ORBS and Alan Brown. There is a great deal of information
available.
